Chapter 3

Alas, for poor Ignatius, part of his duty was to show his appreciation to Gregoire for his current occupation. Therefore, as awkward as he felt at soirees, if Gregoire called for him to attend, he could only do so with good grace.

During one such evening, Ignatius experienced a new sensation, that of seeking vengeance. Time had moved on, but it appeared that he was to be the butt of Desiree and Jacques’s jokes for some duration. He had it settled in his mind that the two were in cahoots. Both of them had given him knowing looks and teasing smiles in the past weeks and Desiree knew how to play with a man’s heart and…other things. Perhaps Jacques was not the brute of the piece, although that did not make his part in this any less forgivable. Some hope that he was mistaken when he heard Desiree call Jacques ane coq, but again everyone laughed this off as yet another of Jacques’s amusing monikers. However, as Ignatius watched her now, he foresaw another year of instruction winding endlessly ahead of him. Time during which she spent yawning, not because she wasn’t bright and failed to understand, or grew bored, but simply to irritate him. Gagggh. How had his life come to this?

He watched her now, playing the room better than she could manipulate any instrument. She, as fresh as a daisy in her daring dress, cheeks pinched to make them rosy, the very picture of beauty. She, unanimously celebrated by men who sought her companionship, by women who wanted to be her friend, and by their families who no doubt hoped a little of her bearing would rub off on their less elegant offspring should she so much as deign to glance at them. In appearance, she offset her yellow hair with her dress and choice of jewellery. Tonight the white, gold, and yellow of her dress reflected as highlights of her personality, even if the design edged the boundaries of decency.

Desiree had many aims in life, but she hid them well under flirtatious laughter and demure smiles. To think that Jacques would ever have considered Ignatius a threat made the poor lanky man laugh. A mere tutor for one such as Desiree? Never. He would never be within range of her expectations. He doubted Jacques was good enough for her either. In fact, none of the men present were admirers with whom Desiree Delacroix would settle.

Suddenly that became clear to him. No wonder the only time she ceased her pretence of yawning was when he talked of other places, described major cities. Why, yes, if any of the local men thought they had a chance with her, they were mistaken. Ignatius could see it now. In a few months, she would begin to besiege her father and then would come a trip, perhaps overseen by her tutor and a handful of servants. Desiree would ask to see something of the world. One thing Ignatius did not want was to be her chaperone while she sought a suitor.
